Al Maktoum International Airport, the second Dubai Airport, will open on June 27 this year. And since it is Dubai, it will be “the world’s largest airport”. The operations will start on June 27 only for freight (what the main purpose of the new airport is anyway). Passenger operations will start at a later date, Paul Griffiths, the Dubai Airports CEO, stated.

They are already in talks with mayor international airlines to have them operate from both Dubai airports. “We are talking to a number of airlines. Several of them have expressed interest. We have put a proposition to them and we hope to be able to make some announcements shortly as to who the initial airline operators will be.”
There is no exact date yet when the airport opens up for passengers as well. The whole airport, including runway, traffic control and control tower can be tested thoroughly with the cargo operations running. The new Dubai airport, called Al Maktoum International is part of the $33bn Dubai World Central development in Jebel Ali.
