Eat a Camel Burger in Dubai

Dubai has a new Fast Food Sensation – The Camel Burger. Residents and visitors of Dubai can’t seem to get enough of this new Camel Burger. “It’s a sensation,” Ramesh, restaurant manager at “Local House” said. “Everyone’s bored of beef and chicken. So, as soon as the word got out, we had queues of customers eager to give it a try.”

Ramesh mentioned that the new Camel Burgers are healthier than the American Beef Burgers and also a special that you probably cant find anywhere else in the world yet. The Camel Burger is nearly fat-free and has no cholesterol. A Camel Burger sets you back 6 US$. He did also say that they taste amazing. He is the restaurant manager, what else can he say. The restaurant is using freshly baked khameer, a very popular regional bread, instead of the sesame bun’s used by the fast food competition. Melted cheddar cheese makes the topping together with a special burger sauce. Included is also a big portion of the rather usual fries.

Ramesh stated that the burgers are a big hit already, but many of his visitors cant even taste a difference to normal burgers. Even though camel meat is similar to beef in it’s taste, it has a reputation for being rather tough. How the “Local House” transforms it into a soft and tender camel meat burger remains a closely guarded secret. “Khalib – the camel burger inventor and restaurant owner – spent over two months perfecting the recipe and finding out how to make the meat tender. I’m not going to tell you how it’s done,” Ramesh mentioned.

For the full camel experience, guests should wash their order down with a vitamin and insulin rich vanilla flavored camel milkshake. The camel products are already so popular in the restaurant that they plan to open a separate section, the “Camel Corner”, for it. “We’ll sell camel soup, camel salad, camel steak, camel kebab, camel biryani and a ‘camel special,’” Ramesh said.

Camel meat was for centuries a part of traditional nomad recipes since it has the ability to survive in the very special conditions in the Middle East. The success already brought some competition in Dubai, some other restaurants are starting to use camel meat as well. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, founded “Al Nassma,” which produces exclusive camels’ milk chocolate last year. The unusual chocolate company wants to become the “Godiva of the Middle East,” as a earlier Reuters report stated. Plans to open a new burger place in the shadow of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, are under way. So camel meat is going to be a food of Dubai’s future as well as its past. When are you going to eat your Camel Burger? Did you taste it already? How was it?
