“Eid in Dubai” will feature entertainment destinations, spectacular concerts, international character shows, fireworks, and shopping deals across the city.

Being organized for the third consecutive year, “Eid in Dubai” aims to promoting Dubai as a festive destination during Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha celebrations. It also aims to bring together the diverse cultures and nationalities residing or visiting Dubai to celebrate this joyous occasion in three days of continuous festivities designed to cater to all ages.

Ebrahim Saleh, Coordinator-General of “Eid in Dubai”, said, “‘Eid in Dubai’ has become a main event within Dubai’s festivals especially after the success of the past two editions. It also affirms Dubai’s position as a premier destination for festivals and events in the region all round the year.

“One of our main aims of organizing this festivity is to create a social event that brings together all cultures and nationalities to enjoy one great celebration. We have spared no effort in putting together a colorful and attractive calendar of local and international events that will be strategically distributed across the city so that everyone can participate and feel the festivity wherever they are in Dubai.”

To emphasize the spirit of Eid and to spread the feelings of joy and festivity, both shows are being staged by the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment for free.

In a span of three days, visitors will get to enjoy character shows by Ben 10 and Hello Kitty.

Ben 10 features a 25 minute live stunt action show incorporating spectacular graphics.

Popular dinosaur Barney joins Baby Bop and BJ will mount a show titled Barney’s Beach Party. The show is free and followed by a “meet and greet” session.

Popular children’s television program Lazy Town also takes the stage to enthrall children.

Besides the characters shows, families can also look forward to a brilliant Aquafantasia show that includes fireworks, laser lighting, and water screens.

A Dino Live exhibition at Dubai Festival City takes visitors on a journey of dinosaurs through an exhibition, shows, character meet and greet, merchandising stands, and food stalls themed on dinosaurs and the Jurassic age.

Dubai Airport Expo is gearing to host what is billed as the biggest Back-to-School party. A comprehensive stationery exhibition combined with a fun fair featuring numerous games and attractions, children will have found the perfect way to celebrate Eid Al Fitr in addition to preparing for school re-opening.

One of the most iconic landmarks in UAE is part of Eid celebrations this year with amazing hotel and entertainment packages for visitors.

Dubai is securing another landmark that comes with “the tallest” tag, and this time it is not a tower.

At 118 feet (approximately 36 meters), the local Hard Rock Cafe is building the world’s tallest guitar to mark its re-opening at a new location.

The original Hard Rock Cafe closed in March 2009 and will be relocated in the Dubai Festival City in October.

“In keeping with the tradition of Hard Rock Cafe, the new restaurant will incorporate an iconic electric guitar. This will be the tallest guitar anywhere in the world,” said Phillip Evans, Director of Commercial and Retail Leasing for DFC owners Al Futtaim Group Real Estate.

“It will be near the cruising boulevard so that the guitar can be seen by those traveling on Business Bay Crossing,” Evans said.

In a statement, Hard Rock International said, “Not to be content with the sheer magnitude of the (relocated) cafe’s size, this Hard Rock will also include an iconic 118-foot guitar which is anticipated to be the largest in the world and will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records”.

While construction of the new 26,400 square-foot Hard Rock Cafe is finished, the mother of all guitars is still on the drawing board.

Present were Humaid Mohamed Al Qutami, Minister of Education, Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, and Dr Rashid Ahmad bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water.

The Farjam Collection @ DIFC launched a captivating exhibition which tells the story of Islamic art from its inception to the dawn of industrialization.

The exhibition reflects on the essentials of Islamic Art and was created through collaboration between The Farjam Collection and Zayed University.

Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President of Zayed University praised the spectacular organization of this exceptional exhibition which spans the entire history of Islam and includes some of the rarest artistic masterpieces of the Islamic world inspired by the principles and spirit of Islam through objects executed with exquisite craftsmanship revealing the milestones of Islam founded on piety, tolerance and peace.

He stressed that disseminating Islamic cachet would require all concerted efforts to present it through various ways to spread cultural and artistic awareness among all segments and groups of the society, namely younger generations in a strive to consolidate their affiliation, Arab and Islamic identity.

He praised the cooperation links between Zayed University and The Farjam Collection and the importance of supporting communication between universities and educational institutions as well as national and international entities for a cross- cultural exchange of experiences to enhance student’s innovation and creativity in their various projects reflecting their learning. He affirmed the support of Zayed University of its students’ talents reflected through the University dedicated academic programs and application of best educational practices offered to them to broaden their social and cultural interaction and involvement with the growing art movement in the UAE, with the support of the country’s wise leadership in the service of the nation.

“Being part of this exhibition has made me appreciate Islamic art much more,” said Alia Al-Siri, a student from Zayed University. Seeing and learning about each individual object has magnified the smallest details and the thoughts that have been put into each object by the creator. It has been an amazing experience to be part of this exhibition. I am so proud and excited to finally have the exhibition open for public, and I can’t wait to hear their feedback and reviews.” Infused with the principles and spirit of Islam, the 99 objects selected by Zayed University’s art students include manuscripts, elaborate textiles and splendid ceramics and glass wares. The exhibition will run through the end of Ramadan and is supported by The Hafiz Foundation and National Auto Company.

Emirates Foundation’s Science Technology and Environment Programme worked with Sesame Workshop to tailor the event for the children of the UAE. In addition to learning about planets, galaxies, the earth and stars children will explore the phases of the moon and their relationship with Arabian months, including the month of Ramadan, and Islamic achievements in the fields of science and astronomy – all designed to stimulate young people’s interest in science and foster a love for learning and discovery.

Children will attend live shows performed by beloved Sesame characters; Elmo, Bert, Ernie and Khokha. Alongside the performances comes an exhibition that includes a Mini Cinema where classic episodes of Sesame Street are screened, a treat for children and parents alike. The event will also feature a Story Time corner, where the audience is taken on a magical journey into space through literature, and the Creation Corner, where imaginative minds can draw constellations, make paper planes and even build rockets.

Mubadala Aerospace, the official sponsor, contributed to the event with the ‘Museum of Flight’, which is exhibiting exclusively at this event. The c will use flying toys and models to help kids discover the science and history of flight and wing design. The Apollo Moon School will delve into the history and operations of rocketry and robotics with a live, hands-on approach to capture children’s imaginations.

“Reach for the Sky” is the latest annual version of the Foundation’s own ‘Science in the Mall’, offering colourful, interactive learning steps for children that engage them with the wonders of science and astronomy today.

Dr Abdullah Ismail Abdullah, Senior Advisor to the Emirates Foundation’s Science, Technology and Environment Programme which has initiated the project said: “Reach for the Sky stands as part of our larger project Science in the Mall, a scheme we organize every summer. In the last two years the project was implemented in Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi. Based on the feedback and success of this year’s edition, we will study the possibility of doing the same event in other emirates.”

Dr Ismail added that holding the event at a popular mall allows the Foundation to reach a larger number of youth. Using the best edutainment tools available helps stimulate their inquisitiveness and build a desire to deepen their knowledge of fields like science, engineering and astronomy. “We aim to reach 1,000 children per day in the age range of 4 to 14 years old.” Homaid Al Shemmari, Mubadala Aerospace Executive Director said: “I want the children of the UAE to stimulate their minds with the wondrous world of science and math, get a taste for the many exciting opportunities and fun possibilities that lay within those fields and learn how they can be explored within careers in the aerospace industry’.

“We are honored to work with the Emirates Foundation and Mubadala Aerospace to provide young children with a fun learning experience that introduces the wonders of astronomy, science and space travel,” said Robert Knezevic, Sesame Workshop’s Regional Director of International Partnerships. “Many of today’s parents grew up with Iftah Ya Simsim and we commend the Emirates Foundation for their leadership in re-introducing the project to today’s children. Our joint objective is to prepare today’s young people with the skills necessary for the 21st century.”

Reach for the Sky activities will run nightly at the Marina Mall Abu Dhabi, starting from August 12, 2010 to coincide with the first day of Ramadan, continuing throughout the Holy month. On weekdays shows will commence at 9:30pm and finish at midnight. On weekends the shows run from 9:30pm to 1 am.

DIFF’s successful co-production market, Dubai Film Connection (DFC) – established in 2007 – will partner with the newly formed Cairo Film Connection to provide Arab filmmakers access to potential financial and infrastructure support as well as valuable industry connections.

With the new partnership, filmmakers can apply to both DFC and Cairo Film Connection for support in realizing their film projects. DIFF will award a selected project from Cairo Film Connection and invite the selected filmmaker to attend DIFF to explore further funding opportunities at DIFF through meetings with established industry players who attend the festival.

Abdulhamid Juma, Chairman of Dubai International Film Festival said: “DIFF pioneered the concept of the co-production market in the Arab world with Dubai Film Connection, which has showcased 46 projects in the past three years 10 of which have been completed with a further 9 in production. We believe that to promote a regional film industry it is extremely important to bring Arab filmmakers into direct contact with the international and regional film industries, which is facilitated by DFC. The partnership with Cairo Film Connection will further expand our reach across the Arab world, giving more opportunities for filmmakers to accomplish their projects”.

The Dubai Film Connection offers directors of Arab origin more than $120,000 in prize money and invaluable industry connections. The co-production market also matches the short-listed director/producer teams with specialists in film production, sales, distribution and funding to further their projects.

Winners at DFC receive three DIFF Awards each offering $25,000 and the $25,000 Desert Door DIFF Work in Progress Award. This year, Film Clinic Egypt extends support to DFC projects with an award of $10,000 for a first-time feature filmmaker.

The seventh edition of Dubai International Film Festival 2010 will be held from December 12 to 19. BSkyB is in talks about launching a Sky News-branded 24-hour Arabic language service in conjunction with an Abu Dhabi-based private investor.

It would compete with the Qatar-based al-Jazeera and other Arabic language news services in the Middle East and North Africa.

Sky said that the channel will launch within the next two years if the discussions are successful.

The new channel, which would be a 50/50 joint venture between the two parties, will be based in Abu Dhabi and have bureaux “in most major regional and international news centres”.

It would be broadcast free-to-air across the Middle East and North Africa regions offering, according to Sky News, “independent and neutral coverage of the news agenda”.

“The Middle East is undergoing rapid economic and social development and is becoming an increasingly attractive region for media investment,” said John Ryley, head of Sky News. “This venture would build on our existing strengths as an international news provider and bring the Sky News brand to a new audience. Discussions are progressing well and we look forward to bringing a new approach to Arabic-language news.”

The extension to Mall of the Emirates shopping mall will open on September 1, it was announced on Monday.

The new extension will feature more than 40 new luxury stores including seven new restaurants.

“It’s very moving and truly thrilling to be part of something that people have connected with and have strong feelings about,” says Parker, “something that they’ve welcomed into their homes every week and then gone to the theater to watch. So we gave a lot of thought as to how we’d take them into the next phase, two years down the road.”

For Carrie Bradshaw, an unconventional woman by any definition, doing what’s expected of her has never been the norm, and her stance in this film is no different. As writer-director Michael Patrick King puts it, “tradition snuck in and it freaked her out.” In fact, Parker notes, “Carrie, who at one point thought she might not be the marrying type, is finally married to the love of her life, the man she spent most of her adult life pursuing.” She further adds that Carrie is not alone in reaching a crossroads in her life. “All the women, at this point in their lives, appear to be content with having what they thought they wanted. But, as Michael Patrick so cleverly does in his writing, there’s nuance and layers and complications under the surface.”

In the film, when we first glimpse Carrie and Big in their home together, Carrie is feeling a bit unsettled in her settled, married life, wondering “what happens after you say ‘I do.’” And because Carrie is also a writer, she has even gone so far as to express her feelings about the idea of marriage in her new book — a collection of comic essays in which she lampoons the idea of traditional wedding vows.

“Carrie has spent her career writing about being single, and for the first time she’s writing about a different topic, being married,” Parker observes. “The truth is, she doesn’t know a lot about it yet. But she’s learned that there’s a difference between having a wedding and being married. She’s been married for a very short time and she’s not quite wearing it as comfortably as she wants to.” Parker adds, “Carrie likes to go out, she likes to live the city life, looking, watching, participating. One of the many things she’s secretly struggling with is the idea of staying in, of these shackles she has figuratively projected onto herself. She’s able to intellectualize it, but emotionally, she’s not actually where she would like to be in the marriage. She wants to be able to say she feels good about the expectations she has had of her partner and herself. So for Carrie, it becomes a story about ‘Yes, I had a wedding, but am I married? Am I married?’”

For the cast and crew of “Sex and the City 2,” working together throughout the years has become, perhaps, the best of traditions.

“I think what was most interesting to me about the ‘Sex and the City 2’ shoot was getting away with everyone,” Sarah Jessica Parker says. “We were all removed from the most important people in our lives, our families, and that was very difficult, but I think it also helped us grow even closer than ever—and we’ve all been pretty close going on 12 years now. It was probably the best time we ever had as a group, and it was so great to have that experience.”

Three luxury Audi vehicles – an Audi Q7, an Audi TT, and an Audi S5 – were up for grabs in the promotion, which saw three shoppers walk away with one of the brand new cars after spending just AED 300 enjoying the great retail mix available at the mall.

Emirati Fahad Abdulla Ebrahim came all the way from Fujairah to visit Mirdif City Center after hearing about the new stores and the mall’s first ‘Spend and Win’ promotion.

His trip was certainly worth the effort now that he is the proud owner of a gleaming Audi S5. “I had visited Mirdif City Center about three times before and really enjoyed the new mall. I heard about the promotion, so I thought I would come back again and check it out.”

“I didn’t really think I’d win. When I got the call I thought it was a joke – I couldn’t believe it! I have been looking to buy a new sports car, so now my dream has come true!”

Audi TT winner, Sandeep Jain from India also couldn’t believe his luck: “I was extremely happy and excited when I received the call from Mirdif City Center that I’d won an Audi car. It was my first visit to the mall and I was rewarded with this unbelievable prize. I bought an LCD TV from Carrefour and filled in the promotion voucher. Now I’ll always have fond memories of the mall, and will certainly be back again as it has proved extremely lucky for me!”

Rounding off the winners was 19-year-old student Salim Jamaluddin, who won the Audi Q7 after his second visit to Mirdif City Centre, and is now enjoying driving in style.

Phadnis, an established Bollywood designer and celebrity favourite, is taking part in the event for the first time. He is showcasing his collections along with 300 other designers at the show which will last till April 10. Vikram Phadnis wowed the audience of brides-to-be and fashionistas with his showcase. His latest collection, which made its debut in Dubai, featured a flamboyant array of dresses with defined silhouettes in warm colours to suit the UAE market.

The remaining opening day fashion shows enraptured the crowd as the models graced the catwalk in embellished abayas by Al Motahajiba Abayas, jalabiyas and kaftans for indulge by Divya Oswal and exquisite bridal gowns by local favorite and long-time Bride Show supporter Jalal M. Khan Est. ‘Demetrios’.

One of the biggest features that had the eyes popping and camera bulbs flashing was the 16ft tall wedding cake created by the culinary masters at the Shangri-la Hotel in Dubai. Also present were senior make up artists from MAC Cosmetics and hair stylists from Jamil Style.

Mr Ian Ferguson, General Manager, Dubai Marina Mall, said: “At Dubai Marina Mall our focus is on community living and ensuring that all visitors have an engaging time. Eid and UAE National Day are a special time and this year, as they fall close to each other, we decided it was important to ensure our activities also reflect the culture and traditions of the UAE.

We have also introduced other entertainment activities to keep the children happy and enjoy their time off from school.” The Urban Adventure play center is a series of beams, poles, rope bridges and other climbing structures providing children the opportunity to learn and discover in a safe environment. Participants are secured with harnesses and cables so they can climb and fall to their heart’s content as they play ‘Tarzan’ style. The play center will be held between November 26 and December 4, from 2pm to 11pm. Paintings and drawings, themed around National Day, by students from Dubai British School, Wellington International School and Regent International School, will also be displayed at the Dome Atrium in the mall.

The cineplex is developed by Reel Entertainment, a joint venture of Emaar Malls Group and Singapore-based premier entertainment providers Cathay Organisation Holdings.

The highlight of The Dubai Mall cineplex is the introduction of the Hollywood Chic design concept, which assures a modern cinema experience. The seats are ergonomically designed with the widest legroom for utmost comfort, while the overall ambience is reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour intelligently blended into contemporary interiors using modern materials, said a statement.

The sound and projection system are world-class with THX certification, and the digital theatre experience also includes 3D presentation, it said.

Nasser Rafi, chief executive officer, Emaar Malls Group, said: “Entertainment and leisure attractions have become an integral part of mall developments. The extensive leisure portfolio of the mall has become a social magnet for families, and the opening of Reel Cinemas will further add to the overall entertainment offerings.”

He added: “Reel Cinemas is being developed to the highest international standards with expertise from Cathay Organisation Holdings Ltd, Emaar’s joint venture partner. Cathay has an established track-record in developing superior-quality theatres, and movie-goers at Reel Cinemas will be assured of a never-before cinema experience.”

Reel Cinemas is spread over an area of 110,000 sq ft with direct access from the carpark on both levels. The complex will feature four Platinum Movie Suites apart from The Picturehouse, the first dedicated arthouse hall at a cineplex in Dubai. Among the 17 other regular halls is a premiere hall that seats more than 300 people.

In applying the Hollywood Chic cinema concept, Reel Cinemas will feature an extensive use of mirrors and subtle patterns to create shimmering surfaces and reflections. Mood lighting will add a touch of drama to the interiors, and in the lobbies a starry sky effect will add to the ambience, said Rafi.

The lobby floors are clad in a geometric pattern of toned grey stone, and the columns form stars on the floor to sweep up in an interpretation of the theatre drape. The lounge seating areas are upholstered in rich fabrics and leather. The Platinum Movie Suites and The Picturehouse have special lounges furnished with plush leather seating and modern design.

Suresh Bhatia, chief executive officer, Emaar Retail, said: “The big-cinema experience of Reel Cinemas is supported by the latest in digital audio-visual technology. Several service features will be introduced including on-line ticket booking facilities, automated kiosks and box-office counters. Reel Cinemas is billed to become a popular attraction that further adds to the leisure components of the mall including Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, Dubai Ice Rink, The Waterfall, and soon-to-open KidZania and SEGA Republic.”

The Dubai Mall has a wide spectrum of retail and leisure choices for visitors. Of the 1,200 retail outlets in the mall, more than 900 have opened. There are 160 F&B outlets offering an array of options for visitors and 14,000 parking spaces.

Simultaneously, a team of choreographers will get to work to synchronise the water movement to selected music pieces. Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman, Emaar Properties, said: “Undertaking a project of magnificent proportion demands extensive testing to ensure the smooth integration of its varied aspects. “The Dubai Fountain is not only a celebration of the affinity for aesthetic water features that is associated with the Arab World. It also creates a new lifestyle destination for Dubai in the 500-acre Downtown Burj Dubai community,” he said. The fountain has a unique construction design, featuring five circles of varying sizes and two arcs. In comparison, the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas has only one arc and three circles. It has double the mass of nozzles including fan nozzles that are not present in the Las Vegas master-piece.

When fully operational, The Dubai Fountain will have more than 22,000 gallons of water airborne at any given moment. Powerful nozzles take the water-jets to heights ranging from three to 500ft. Over 6,600 most advanced incandescent large fountain lights and 25 colour projectors will create a visual spectrum of more than 1,000 water expressions. “At WET, we aspire to total mastery of nature’s elements,” said Mark Fuller, WET’s founder and Chief Excellence Officer. “And with The Dubai Fountain, we not only defy gravity, we have utilised the latest technology in lighting, robotics, and our signature water Shooters to create an unparalleled experience.”

The Waterfall runs through the entire height of the mall, traversing all four levels, and is adorned with art sculptures of human divers made of fiberglass to create a dynamic visual spectrum that complements the rhythmic flow of water.
