Restaurant customers wash their own dishes for charity

The new Fraiche Café and Bistro in cluster Y of JLT launched the four-day offer, which ended yesterday, to support global charity Water Aid.

The ‘Wipe Your Bill Clean for Water Aid’ initiative saw
customers given the option of paying for their food as usual, or doing the dishes for a free meal and seeing their bill amount donated to the charity. Fraiche founder and managing director Yousef Al Barqawi said about 100 out of the estimated 450 people they’d had through their doors since Wednesday had swapped dirhams for dishes.

“Everyone’s taken it in good spirits,” said the 29-year-old Jordanian. “It’s good to give something back.” Customers relished being involved in the charity idea, which was backed by global firms Unilever and Vileda.

Fraiche mid-morning breakfaster Lisa Szatsznajder, from Australia, and her French friend Alison Lehr both gave
it the thumbs up. “Love it,” said Szatsznajder. “It’s not often a café will offer a free meal.”

But when it comes to dishwashing, Al Barqawi said Dubai dwellers really need to step up to the plate.

“The standards of hygiene in restaurants are far higher than in the home,” he said. “We had to rewash all the dishes – but it’s about the fun aspect of people taking part.”
