HLG awards sleeper contract for Qatar light rail

By CW Staff

The Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG), the civil works contractor building Qatar’s Education City light rail line, has awarded Rail. One a contract to supply its ballastless track system for the project.

The German company will produce around 14,000 TB/ZB bi-block concrete sleepers for the 11.5km line, with production scheduled to begin in the first quarter of this year at its facility in Ha’il, Saudi Arabia.

The 25-station line is due to open in autumn 2015, and will eventually link Education City with the Doha Metro network.

Siemens was awarded a turnkey contract last year covering signalling and communications systems, electrification, and depot equipment, as well as platform screen doors at four stations. Siemens will also supply a fleet of 19 Avenio low-floor LRVs, which will be equipped for catenary-free operation. More info
