Commentators, fans and the athletes themselves have run out of superlatives to describe what many consider the greatest Games ever.
Even Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony, which many people had written off before it had begun due to the scale of the show in Beijing four years earlier, was a success.
Sure, Team GB (the ‘home team’ as it were) had unprecedented success, but it was so many other things that came together to create such a memorable spectacle of sport. Michael Phelps becoming the most decorated Olympian in history. Oscar Pistorius becoming the first double leg amputee to compete in the Olympics. Female athletes from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei competing for the first time. David Rudisha’s world record in the Men’s 800m final.
The list of memorable individual moments go on, but collectively they all came together to create three weeks of one of the greatest sporting events of a lifetime…
